What is Irlen Syndrome?
Irlen Syndrome is a visual processing difficulty where the brain struggles to process certain light wavelengths efficiently. It is not a problem with the eyes themselves, but with how the brain processes what the eyes see. It can significantly affect reading, concentration, learning and daily life.
Irlen Syndrome affects individuals of all ages and is often found alongside dyslexia, ADHD, autism and other specific learning differences. It is estimated to affect around 15% of the general population and up to 46% of individuals with reading and learning difficulties.
The good news is that Irlen Syndrome can be significantly improved with the use of precision spectral overlays or filters — coloured lenses specifically calibrated to the individual's unique needs.
Common Symptoms
Sensitivity to bright lights, fluorescent lighting or sunlight — causing discomfort, squinting or avoidance.
Tiring quickly when reading, losing your place on the page, or words appearing to move or blur.
Frequent headaches during or after reading, screen use or prolonged concentration tasks.
Difficulty sustaining attention when reading or working, particularly under artificial lighting.
Letters or words appearing to move, shimmer, fade or jump on the page.
Sore, tired or strained eyes after reading or screen use, even for short periods.
Services Available
An initial screening to identify whether Irlen Syndrome may be affecting you, using standardised assessment tools.
A comprehensive diagnostic assessment to confirm Irlen Syndrome and determine the precise spectral filters needed.
Custom-made tinted lenses calibrated to your exact wavelength needs, for use in glasses or as overlays.
Training for educators, support staff and professionals on identifying and supporting individuals with Irlen Syndrome.
The Process
Dave Barrett, our accredited Irlen Method Practitioner, guides you through the assessment process with care and clarity. Each step is designed to be straightforward and comfortable.
Book a ScreeningContact us to discuss your concerns and whether an Irlen assessment may be appropriate for you or your child.
An initial screening session to assess whether Irlen Syndrome is likely to be a factor, using standardised perceptual scales.
If screening suggests Irlen Syndrome, a full diagnostic assessment is carried out to identify the precise colour and tint needed.
Precision spectral filters are ordered and fitted. A follow-up review ensures the filters are providing maximum benefit.
